In all honesty....who cares?

A community administrator should be targeting a specific group of people with a specific interest. If you have run into problems keeping users, I would generally say it is because your forum really is not interesting enough. There are of popular forums ( run by phpBB and other software ) directed at a certain group of people that are just as busy if not busier then ever.

If you forum is just a General Chat website, and doesn't involve specific content, then I would agree with your post. But keep it interesting!

I have a couple of boards in the 'general chat area', and haven't seen any less traffic, maybe it would've been higher if there were no facebook, who knows...

Facebook is more based around networks of people than subjects of discussion, while forums are based more on subjects of discussion than networks of people. Each has its niche.

If you try to use Facebook as a forum for discussion of a topic, you run into the problem that it encourages incredibly superficial discussion. It's the last place you want to post a long thorough discussion of something.

Facebook is nothing like a forum, they both have there ups and downs, and features.. If someone likes a forum they will always use it, facebook will be the biggest site in the world and I don't see it ever changing..

Well 2nd site in the world, I know they will surpass google in a few years if they keep expanding.

Some people said similar things about MySpace back in the days when it was popular, but look at MySpace now. Now it's almost seen as a joke that MySpace could have reached such a pinnacle, ever since Facebook surfaced in popularity. While many may think that Facebook is going to be the last of the major social networking websites, let's not forget how the past has played out. The Internet is always evolving and changing in different ways, and I'm sure we will continue to see significant changes in the coming years, especially with regard to social networking sites such as Facebook.

whoever makes the new idea people will come, facebook i believe isn't going anywhere for a long time, there is too much usage for it to die or anyone else to take it over, It's worth BILLIONS, they demolished myspace, they are peaking a few million users, facebook is hitting 30+ million users daily, and over 500,000 accounts, not even 10% of myspace.

Personally, I resent all of those kinds of 'social networking' websites. I understand the concept, but I still dislike them greatly. However, they, and forums, will always have their own roles, and people will always have their own preferences.
